ABOUT THE BOOK From the elegant to the quirky, teapots and coffee pots come in a range of styles and designs and are among the most familiar household items. Both decorative and easily displayed, they are very collectable and can be relatively inexpensive. In this book, Steven Goss charts their development over a period of three hundred years, providing information on the materials used in their manufacture, influential factories and designers, and a guide to dating the many different styles. * In the eighteenth century a pound of tea could cost more than a week's wages for a skilled craftsman. * Early coffee pots often have handles set at a right angle to the spout. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Steven Goss has been involved in the antiques trade for more than twenty-five years as a full-time...

7 Shore tea rooms where you can sip and relax - Asbury Park Press

But tea rooms are like spas. When was the last time you treated yourself to an hour or two of conversation with friends. A tea room provides a setting of civility and harmony. The clink of a dainty bone china cup against its saucer is a far more relaxing sound than the foamy whoosh of an espresso machine. In a tea room, you may well find yourself spending time with friends, rather than killing time staring at your phone. In her comings and goings, Theresa Mezzacapo of Long Branch passed by The White House in Oakhurst many times. She was curious about the tea house and, eventually, she made time to visit. She came back with friends, and planned a mother-daughter outing with her 7-year-old daughter, Ava. “It’s wonderful,” she said one afternoon, while browsing through The White House in Oakhurst after work. Mezzacapo stopped in to pick up a packet of Strawberry Sips tea as a gift for a friend. “This is it,” she said, smelling a sample of the loose tea. Then she inquired about a certain tea cup she’d seen during a previous visit. Kirsten Kristensen, owner of The White House in Oakhurst, quickly found it on a display shelf. The Royal Crown pedestal footed tea cup and saucer, in a robin’s egg blue, was available for $8. Mezzacapo added it to her purchase. “I’ve been wanting that cup since I came to the Downton Abbey tea,” Mezzacapo said. Kristensen frequently schedules special events at her tea house. The “Downton Abbey tea,” which capitalizes on the popularity of the British TV series, is among her most popular. In the spring, Kristensen hosted a tea for the Central New Jersey chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America. She says her customers gravitate to tea rooms because they appreciate a properly brewed pot of tea, served professionally and courteously. “Sometimes, you can go to a fancy restaurant and order tea and you’ll be given a tea bag and water,” Kristensen said. “They expect you to make your own tea. But you wouldn’t be expected to make your own dinner, would you. Kristensen, a native of Denmark, is a tea expert, certified at the highest professional level by the Specialty Tea Institute of the Tea Association of the USA. She enjoys sharing the history and health benefits of tea with her guests, as well as the etiquette of tea. The White House in Oakhurst is among several tea houses in the area that offer afternoon tea. Partaking in afternoon tea, with several light courses and a freshly brewed pot of tea, is a treat. Prices vary from place to place, but you can usually expect to spend about $20 to $30 per person. Kathleen Hippeli offers afternoon tea at One Steep At A Thyme, which she opened in 2013 in a Victorian house in Jamesburg after 30 years working in the pharmaceutical industry. “I had a passion for going to bed-and-breakfasts, in Cape May and other places,” Hippeli said, “and my favorite part was coming back to the B&B after a day of shopping or whatever, and having tea. I realized that’s what I wanted to do: study tea and open a business. Hippeli has an eclectic collection of china that she mixes and matches for afternoon tea at One Steep At A Thyme. “I like to mix everything up,” she said. “It all goes well with the Victorian house we’re located in. ”. Running a tea house, like any small business, is hard work, Hippeli said, but she added, “The look on my customers’ faces is priceless and makes it all worthwhile. Originally open only on weekends, One Steep At A Thyme is expanding with weekday hours beginning in September, as more people discover the appeal of a tea room. “It’s a good way to slow down,” said Kristensen, at The White House in Oakhurst. “There have been many times when I’ve had someone come in and say, “I only have an hour,” and then stay for two. Here are some area tea rooms:. 600 Main: A Bed & Breakfast And Victorian Tea Room, 600 Main St. , Toms River. Owners Susan and John Notte restored this 1897 home to its Victorian splendor. The three-story house was built in Dutch Revival style, with a grand porch, portico and carriage house. The Nottes operate 600 Main as a bed-and-breakfast, but visitors also can take in the beauty of the home by patronizing the tea room, with its crisp linens, fine china, tea pots with cozies, and tiered luncheon servers. Afternoon tea is served from noon to 4 p. m. , Wednesdays through Saturdays.
