The Surrey Steampunk Convivial

Well I said I’d never be the same again after going to a Steampunk weekend. I arrived before I was due to play autoharp for them and they were all engaged in teapot racing. Yes tea pot racing. A fancy tea pot mounted onto a toy radio controlled vehicle and a course of ramps and obstacles laid out to navigate round. Other bonkers activities included snail racing, inflatable ostrich racing, an intellectual cussing match which Catherine Paver won by a unanimous roar of applause in her favour. Tea duelling was a good one. Two contestants had to dunk their biscuits in a cup of tea for five seconds and then lift it out and hold it as they wished. The one whose biscuit flopped first before they could get it into their mouth was the loser. So, I presented the autoharp and its history by playing some really old tunes, which is what I tend to play anyway. I’d learnt a beautiful song especially, called In the Gloaming that I came upon while searching for Victorian parlour songs. I thought it would suit the event perfectly and it did feel great playing it there. It was a hard gig to play because everyone was a stranger but for two people. The audience was dressed fantastically and completely focused on me. Ow. General’s outfits, top hats with brass goggles on them, corsets, feathers, swords, tricorns and all such like that. I ran through my set and was looking for the nod to finish up but was given the ok to go on. I played the extra tunes and still no one pulled me off. The sound man said carry on or he can just press the button for the intermission music if I liked. The first time I get offered to keep going at a booked gig and I couldn’t think of a thing more to play. Beforehand I was browsing the vintage clothes and tried on a cap that I thought was very me. It didn’t fit but the girl selling it said she might have something that would fit me. Amazing how women can just size a bloke by looking at them. I had this before in a charity shop where a lady nailed my waist size when I was looking at some trousers. Anyway, Jenny, the owner of Belle Epic Vintage pulled a tailored jacket off the rail saying that she has not been able to find someone who has come along that it would fit properly. So I slipped it on and it fitted like a jacket tailored to me. Being the odd shape I am, thin torso and elongated arms, it has been an issue all my life trying to find clothing that fits my body, surrounding it just as water does in a bath. The trousers that complete the set need taking in round the bum to eliminate the slack that I will never be able to fill out. Jenny is going to do this for me. It’s a vintage RAF uniform which will need a few accessories like hat and braces but it will suit me fine and will even go with the bike and the RAF bag I have. If I get invited to the next Steampunk event it will go well. As usual after the set I met some nice people who commented and asked questions about the autoharp. One chap asked if I was interested in playing for his homeless halfway house down in Eastbourne. Long way to go for an unpaid gig though which potentially will not yield more gigs. Anyway that’s The Surrey Steampunk Convivial out of the way. I was worried about this one because it’s such an unusual event to what I’m used to. Next weekend I’m playing in Carshalton and hopefully Sheen at the Summer music festival where I’ll get to see The Delta Bell.
