Robert Burns Copper Kettle
This large copper kettle was used by Robert Burns and his family during the time they lived in Burns House, Dumfries. Burns may have used it to make toddy, whisky diluted with hot water and sweetened with sugar, which was commonly served in Scottish homes. It was later used for similar purposes in the Globe Inn, Dumfries, which was Burns' favourite inn or "howff". The inscription on the kettle reads, "Most prized of the Burns relics. Copper kettle used by Burns at his home in Dumfries.... Bought at public sale of the Philes Collection in February 1915 by Walter Scott of New York, Past Royal Chief of the Order of Scottish Clans and presented by him to Dumfries Burns Club, January 25 1923."
