History: Albert Frey, a modern master - The Desert Sun

” --- Albert Frey, 1990. Albert Frey, one of the early visionaries of modern architecture, lived and worked for nearly sixty years in Palm Springs, where his profound influence on the local architectural landscape is evident to even the casual... 1903 Zurich, Switzerland – d. 1998 Palm Springs, Calif. ) worked for French architect, Le Corbusier in Paris before coming to Palm Springs in 1934. Before moving full-time to Palm Springs, Frey worked on projects in New York. He was one of the architects who contributed to the design of New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1937 – 1939. In 1930, he formed a partnership with architect A. Lawrence Kocher, and together they became known for their ground breaking Modernist... One project, a prefabricated house they called the Aluminaire, was built and shown in the 1931 exhibition of the Allied Arts and Building Products Exhibition in New York. Constructed in less than ten days of lightweight steel and aluminum, the Aluminaire would cost only $3,200 if it were mass produced in large quantities, and presented a low-cost but attractive housing option using easily accessible building... Plans are currently under way to relocate the Aluminaire to Palm Springs from its current location in storage at the New York Institute of Technology on Long Island. Here, in Frey’s adopted home town, with its concentration of Midcentury Modern architecture already a draw to cultural and architectural tourists, the Aluminaire will afford a rare glimpse at the birth of the Modernist movement and a unique... Frey initially came to Palm Springs to work on a project with his partner, A. Lawrence Kocher. Lawrence Kocher’s brother, Dr. J. J. Kocher, happened to be one of the first physicians in Palm Springs, and he needed an office for his practice. Frey and Lawrence Kocher designed a sleek, modernist, two-story “box” at 766 N. Palm Canyon Drive, with walls that could be slid into place to divide the space into various examining and waiting rooms and an interior atrium with a spiral staircase... The Kocher-Samson Building, as it is known, was the first Modernist structure in the city, and still stands in its original location. Frey’s typical desert buildings are low-lying, flat-roofed structures featuring horizontal bands of windows shaded by overhangs, and covered walkways and carports for essential shade. Guided by the belief that architecture should blend with and not dominate the natural surroundings, Frey attempted to satisfy the desert dweller’s aesthetic, physical and spiritual needs. For Frey, modern architecture represented a way of living, seamlessly adapted to its surroundings. Frey, in partnership or collaboration over the years with such Palm Springs architects as John Porter Clark, Robson Chambers and E. Stewart Williams, completed numerous residential, commercial and public commissions including some of Palm Springs’... The Tramway Gas Station (1963-’64) is the first sight to greet travelers as they enter Palm Springs on Highway 111. Its soaring V-shaped roof provides a carpet of shade as it extends out from the building toward the sky. Materials used in its construction illustrate an important aspect of Frey and then-partner Robson Chambers’ work: Readily available, machine-made industrial products such as ribbed steel panels and ordinary concrete block serve not only to create... The Tramway Gas Station, in a brilliant example of adaptive re-use, is now the Palm Springs Visitors Center. Energy-efficient, cost-cutting materials were also used to build the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Valley Station (1960-’63). Ribbed metal exterior panels and unpainted gray concrete block were utilized to complement the rugged terrain of Chino Canyon. The building is basically a covered bridge spanning the steep banks of a stream, its dramatically tipped roof echoing the slope of Mt. San Jacinto. Frey based their unusual triangular configuration on a principle concerning the stability of interlocking triangles of equal size.

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Number in daily life The number 3 seems to come up in my life all the time. Most days when I go to the hospital (long story that I won't go into), I go to the 3rd floor. As an only child, we were always 3 for dinner. I now feed the 3 pets 3 times a day. What it took: This is my first attempt at a still life with anything reflective. What a pain! The glasses were polished as if the Queen was coming to visit, and yet I can see dust spots. I don't have a macro lens, so in order to get a tight DOF I got the tele zoom out, set the glasses up on the dining table in one end of the room and the camera at the other end. Due to the distance and the fact that I wanted it slightly from above, I had to extend my tripod fully and stand on a step ladder to see the finder! Several shots to get the exposure right. Then loads of shots playing around with the composition. Looking at the shots on the computer, the wall 45 degrees in front of the glasses was...

Jim and Helen Ede's House Kettle's Yard Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, UK Kettle's Yard House Between 1958 and 1973 Kettle's Yard was the home of Jim and Helen Ede. In the 1920s and 30s Jim had been a curator at the Tate Gallery in London. Thanks to his friendships with artists and other like-minded people, over the years he gathered a remarkable collection, including paintings by Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, David Jones and Joan Miro, as well as sculptures by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. At Kettle's Yard Jim carefully positioned these artworks alongside furniture, glass, ceramics and natural objects, with the aim of creating a harmonic whole. His vision was of a place that should not be "an art gallery or museum, nor ... simply a collection of works of art reflecting my taste or the taste of a given period. It is, rather, a continuing way of life from these last fifty years, in which...
